I have decided to make a first visit... what should I know?

You’ve been trying to get pregnant for a while now, but for some reason it’s not working out. What better resolution for the new year than to find that reason and finally achieve your dream? We’ll explain what you need to know.

In Spain, nearly 40,000 babies were born in 2018 thanks to assisted reproduction treatments, which represents almost 10% of the total number of births published by the National Institute of Statistics (INE). According to the Spanish Fertility Society (SEF), almost 15% of couples of reproductive age have problems achieving pregnancy. So, as you can see, if you are having problems achieving pregnancy, the first thing you should do is… stay calm. It is much more common than you think.

Next, it’s best to get informed. At iGin we want to help you and give you all the information you need to resolve your doubts. We will be with you from the very beginning, during and after your treatment. We know that a first appointment can be a great effort and that’s why we’ll tell you what you need to know about this step below.

1. The first contact
  • You can call us, write us an email or stop by one of our centers. Consultations are completely free. It is a private appointment, without having to commit to anything. It is normal to have doubts, and that is why at iGin we will answer all your questions in a consultation.
  • When facing fertility treatment, it is very important to do so with all doubts resolved and with confidence, knowing that you are in good hands.

2. The first appointment. The basic study of infertility
  • During the first consultation we will perform a specific gynecological ultrasound for reproduction: assessment of antral follicles, uterine cavity, septa, hydrosalpinx, etc.
  • Before starting treatment, our specialists will recommend the preliminary tests they consider necessary in each particular case. We will inform you of your options and give you all the information you need.

3. Some previous tests
  • There are a series of tests to rule out the main causes of sterility.
    • Basic semen analysis. It is used to count the number of sperm and observe their mobility and morphology.
    • Gynecological ultrasound. This is an ultrasound test, usually performed vaginally by the gynecologist, which allows the uterus, endometrium and ovaries to be assessed (size, number of antral follicles, etc.).
    • Basal hormone analysis. A blood sample taken between the 2nd and 4th day of the menstrual cycle is used to assess both ovarian reserve and hormonal changes.
    • Hysterosalpingography. This is an imaging study performed by a radiologist in which a liquid containing contrast is introduced through the cervix and, using X-rays, allows the uterine cavity and the permeability of the fallopian tubes to be assessed. This test is not necessary in all cases.

Of course, once the basic study has been carried out and depending on the results or your medical history, other complementary tests may be necessary.

It is important to know each case, because each couple is different. Having all the information and data regarding our fertile capacity helps many couples to know what steps to take. In many cases, ignorance, fear or insecurity cause our body not to react and this acts unfavorably on fertility.
