What is egg freezing (fertility preservation)?

We are increasingly delaying the decision to have children. This carries the risk of future infertility, because the ovarian reserve decreases in quantity and quality over time, especially after the age of 35.

To avoid this risk, you can freeze your eggs at an optimal fertile time, so that you can use them with all the assurances when you wish to become a mother. This procedure, called vitrification, allows you to keep the qualities of the eggs intact indefinitely to increase your chances of pregnancy in the future, through a simple and highly demanded treatment.

With the results of the diagnostic tests and the medical history, a hormonal therapy plan is drawn up to stimulate the ovaries to produce as many mature eggs as possible.

The duration of stimulation ranges from 8 to 11 days.

During stimulation, we monitor follicular development by means of vaginal ultrasound scans and hormone blood tests. Once a good number of dominant follicles are developed, the egg retrieval is scheduled.

3 to 4 controls are required during the stimulation.

When the follicles reach the right size, ovulation is induced by a subcutaneous hormone injection.

10 to 12 days after the start of the treatment.

We retrieve the eggs in the operating room in a procedure that lasts between 5 and 15 minutes, with sedation and painkillers. You will not feel any discomfort. Using a fine needle passed through a guide, we extract the fluid from each follicle for biologists to examine for the presence of mature eggs.

36 hours after inducing ovulation.

The eggs are vitrified so that you can use them whenever you decide. When the time comes, they will be thawed.

Frozen eggs can be stored indefinitely.

We have two maintenance fees for frozen eggs:

  • Five years storage: for women who are thinking long-term and do not plan to become mothers in the next few years.
  • Two years storage: for women who want to preserve their fertility in the short term, such as those with low ovarian reserve who are considering having children soon.

Matcher System
An advanced electronic traceability system that ensures the correct identification of all biological samples at every stage of treatment. Using barcodes and electronic verification, the correspondence between the patients and the samples is automatically verified before any procedure. This system provides complete control and added peace of mind for the medical team.
In Vitro Maturation and freezing of eggs
During the egg retrieval, it is common to obtain both mature and immature eggs. Rather than discarding them, we make the most of their potential through the use of in vitro maturation (IVM). This technique consists of culturing immature eggs under controlled laboratory conditions to support their development until they reach maturity. Those that successfully mature can then be vitrified and used in the future, thereby increasing the patient’s reproductive opportunities without the need for additional stimulation. These eggs have a lower developmental potential and are therefore not included in the minimum number required to proceed with ICSI. However, they represent a valuable additional reserve that can sometimes make a significant difference in the final outcome of the treatment.
Transfer of embryos and samples
If the patient wishes to transfer their embryos and/or samples from IGIN to another center, we take care of preparing, processing and protecting the material for transport. We do not charge for this service. In addition, we can advise the patient on selecting the most appropriate transport company, which may involve an associated cost depending on the required service.

Vitrification is the most advanced and safest technique available to preserve female fertility. At IGIN the success rate after devitrification is 99%.

This success will depend on factors associated with the timing of vitrification: age, oocyte quality or number of eggs obtained. The preservation process does not affect the pregnancy rate.

What is ovarian stimulation for fertility preservation?
Stimulation is a fundamental and integral preservation procedure. It consists of administering hormonal medication in order to increase the production of mature eggs in your ovaries. Normally, a woman produces only one egg during her menstrual cycle. With medication we can stimulate the ovaries to obtain the maximum number of mature eggs that will later be vitrified.
How does ovarian stimulation work?
The ovarian stimulation process begins with a thorough evaluation of the patient to determine the most appropriate hormonal protocol. This includes ultrasound scans, hormone testing, and other studies to assess ovarian function and the overall health of the reproductive system. Once the personalised protocol is established, the patient begins to administer (usually at home) medication. The medications are hormone-based (urinary or recombinant gonadotropins). During the stimulation process, the patient is monitored by ultrasound and/or blood tests to control the response of her ovaries to the treatment and to achieve the appropriate follicular size. It may be necessary to make adjustments to the dose of medication to optimise the results. This phase usually lasts between 10 and 12 days.
Should I change anything during the ovarian stimulation phase?

I have not been able to take my medication at the right time. Will anything happen?
Medication should be administered everyday between 8pm and 10pm, preferably at the same time. If it is not possible to administer it at the usual time, it is important to do so as soon as possible so as not to alter the dosage of the medication in the body. There are medications that must be administered at a specific time. In these cases at IGIN we inform the patient of the exact time the medication should be administered.
Will I be put to sleep for the retrieval?
Follicular puncture is performed under mild sedation. During the procedure you will be peacefully asleep, but breathing on your own. No intubation is required.
Can I know how many eggs I am going to obtain in the egg retrieval?
It is not something we can know exactly, as there are many fluctuations between a woman’s cycles. There are indicators, such as the anti-mullerian hormone or the number of follicles, which give us clues as to the possible number of eggs we may find. But this is only an indication and we will not know until the procedure itself.
Are there any negative effects on the eggs that are frozen?
Vitrification is the most modern and efficient method for egg preservation. It is safe and effective, involves no cellular risk to the eggs and has a 99% success rate for thawing in IGIN.
How long can eggs be kept frozen?
Vitrified eggs can be kept frozen indefinitely without degrading their characteristics, quality or viability.
Do I have to pay for the maintenance of the frozen eggs?
At IGIN we offer preservation treatment with two maintenance options included. In the 5-year option, if you wish to keep the eggs after this time, there is an egg maintenance fee of €230 per year. In the 2-year option, after that time the annual maintenance fee is €395.
What will I have to do when I want to use my frozen eggs to get pregnant?
At that moment we will perform an In Vitro Fertilisation treatment. We will microinject your eggs with sperm from your partner or from a donor, if necessary, and, from the resulting embryos, we will transfer the best quality one to your uterine cavity so that it can implant and you can obtain an evolving pregnancy.
