Each person carries a number of genetic characteristics that could cause diseases in their offspring. Normally, carriers of a genetic condition are healthy and are not aware of the risk, but if their partner also carries the same condition, there is a risk that their child will have a relevant genetic disorder.
It is a state-of-the-art technique that allows us to compare the analysis of the couple’s genes to ensure that both are not carriers of the same pathology, thus preventing the embryos resulting from a reproduction treatment from being affected by it.
We perform it the first time a couple is going to undergo assisted reproduction treatment. The results are definitive and stable, so it will not be necessary to do it again in the future. It is performed on both members of the couple if both contribute their gametes, or in the case of donations, on whoever provides the egg or sperm.
The process involves a blood draw. A genetic analysis is then carried out on both parents and the results are compared to check whether they are both carriers of the same disease. If positive, there is a 25% chance that the embryo will have the condition.
We can detect up to 16,595 different mutations that can lead to problems in the embryo, making it impossible to carry a pregnancy to term or resulting in recessive diseases in the baby (rare, but usually serious and with a poor prognosis, such as cystic fibrosis).
The time to obtain results is about 4 or 5 weeks, so we recommend doing it well in advance of starting treatment.
In a few cases, both parents are carriers of the same genetic condition. When this occurs, there are different reproductive solutions:
•Make a prenatal diagnosis during pregnancy.
•Perform reproductive treatments that include Preimplantation Genetic Diagnosis (PGD).
•Resort to egg or sperm donation.
Recuerda que en IGIN la incluimos en todos nuestros tratamientos sin coste.
