What is it?

This is the technical process that allows embryos, oocytes and sperm to be transported in a safe and controlled manner between clinics, hospitals or laboratories, when the patient wishes to undergo treatment in a centre other than the one of origin and they keep their genetic material in a different clinic.

How is it done?

Patients request the transfer of the material. This requires formal written authorisation. The clinic of origin must coordinate with the clinic of destination to ensure that both facilities comply with legal and technical requirements.

Samples are cryopreserved by vitrification. When patients require to transport their biological material, this is carefully prepared, processed and protected for transport.

It is carried out locally, nationally or even internationally, by certified and specialised companies. There may be associated costs depending on the service required.

Once at the destination clinic, the laboratory team receives and stores the material, but is not responsible for the original quality of the material or the circumstances of its transportation.
