We know that a pregnancy less, no matter how early it happens, leaves a deep mark. Questions arise, followed by uncertainty, and often there is a feeling of frustration from not knowing or understanding what has happened. To find answers about the causes of these spontaneous miscarriages, in order to optimize future attempts, we have introduced a new genetic test called Cariotest 'Pregnancy Loss'. We include it free of charge in our treatments.
What is the Cariotest 'Pregnancy Loss'?
It is a test performed using a simple maternal blood sample, from which we analyze fetal DNA to detect whether there has been any chromosomal abnormality that may have caused the pregnancy loss.
Unlike the traditional analysis of embryonic remains, which often fails due to cell culture problems or contamination with maternal DNA, this test is much more effective, accurate and non-invasive.
Why is it important?
- Because up to 70% of early pregnancy losses are due to chromosomal abnormalities.
- Because knowing the cause helps determine the risk of recurrence in future pregnancies.
- Because it allows us to establish whether it is necessary to study the parents, especially in cases of recurrent miscarriages.
- And because having a clear answer is often the first step toward moving forward both emotionally and medically.
What does it exactly detect?
- Aneuploidies (abnormalities in the number of chromosomes) in all chromosomes.
- Large deletions and duplications in autosomal chromosomes.
All of this is made possible thanks to an innovative genetic analysis technology that uses cell-free placental DNA and next generation sequencing, allowing results to be obtained even when the loss has occurred at very early stages.
When can it be done?
This test can be performed from week 5 to week 14 of pregnancy in cases of:
- Anembryonic sacs (blighted ovum).
- Absence of fetal heartbeat.
- Ongoing or already confirmed pregnancy loss.
It is especially recommended if there have been recurrent pregnancy losses. However, it cannot be performed in cases of dichorionic diamniotic twin pregnancies.
