Until now, these treatments were only permitted for heterosexual couples. With the new Bioethics Law, assisted reproduction is approved for all women under 43 years of age.
Lesbian couples and single women under 43 years of age will be able to become pregnant through assisted reproduction in France. The procedure, known in France as PMA (medically assisted procreation) will be covered by social security. In this way, France joins the list of European countries that recognise this right for all people with reproductive capacity.
However, the approved text establishes that once they reach the age of majority, people conceived through assisted reproduction will have the right to know the egg and/or sperm donors from whom they came.
This is a substantial difference from the legislation in countries such as Spain, where the law establishes that donation is completely anonymous and confidential, ensuring that both the donor, the recipient and the children born through domain always remain anonymous. This guarantee continues to encourage many women from European countries to undergo their treatments in Spain, as they value the fact that anonymity will never be broken.
